Spiral Upcut - Create Mortises and Grooves with Ease

One problem you may find with a spiral upcut is that the flutes of the bit may fray wood fibers around the edges where you make the cut, but this is not usually a problem once your project is assembled because these frayed edges are usually hidden by the tenon that is eventually fitted in to mortise, so they most likely won't be noticeable.

When you are working on a project that requires joining several pieces together and a strong union is required for support purposes, using a spiral upcut is your best bet.  Since these bits can cut at a good depth, the grooves or
mortises created will allow the tenons to fit snugly, so that with a bit of wood glue your finished product is solid.  Another benefit is that using a spiral upcut bit with your router helps pull the piece you are working on down to the woodworking table.
